"Don't make a show of me, Miss Pat," she commanded reproachfully. "It isn't correct to show that you are so delighted." "He went upstairs a few minutes ago to see your servant," replied the inspector, rising. "Mine also, major. Yet you don't suspect me of the deed.".

Patricia bubbled with enjoyment of the surprise. She kissed Mrs. Bingham and Mrs. Lindley, too, though she had never laid eyes on her before, and she came near kissing the tall Mr. Lindley, much to the edification of the others who had rushed from the sitting-room at the sound of the outcry. "It's a lovely day, isn't it, Judge Wade?" I asked with the greatest interest, which I didn't really feel, in the weather; but what could I think of to say? A woman is apt to keep the image of a good many of the grand men she sees passing around her in queer niches in her brain, and when one steps out and speaks to her for the first time it is confusing. It was lovely, and I blushed still more as I put my hand up to my cheek so that I wouldn't have to look right at him. "Boys! boys!" said Jen, annoyed at this quarrel, "do not be so positive. If you are both in love with the same woman, let the woman decide." "Certainly not," said Miss Jinny crisply. "I'm merely a guest here. I'm going to do something more practical, and I want you to help me, if you can stop being jealous of the poor girl, for——".
